Re-elect

Dr. Luhui Whitebear

for Corvallis School District 509J Position 4

Transforming words to action.

The Corvallis community has fought for decades to preserve our local commitment to students who need special education services, gifted programs, music, arts, sports, career and vocational programs, AP/honors classes, counseling services, free school meals, free dental and hearing screenings, multi language opportunities, inclusive bathrooms, and seals of biliteracy and many more. Now is not the time to lose sight of these commitments.

Luhui’s Priorities

  • Money.

    Funding crisis

The disinvestment of state funding coupled with the threat of federal funding cuts make it impossible to continue to have the funding we need for public education. Each dollar we lose means less support for our schools. Educating the community on this helps bring all of our voices together to work collectively on advocating for better support of public education.

  • Equity still matters

With federal and local challenges threatening the supports CSD has built, we need to remain strong in our commitments so students and educators know they are valued and the materials being taught matter. Without our support, educators and students could face barriers and discrimination that make going to work and school difficult. At the same time, we need to continue to work towards doing better as a district so the concerns raised by both students and educators are not forgotten and left unaddressed.

  • Public education is the heart of the community

Public education is not just about the materials taught and learned. It is also about learning who we are as individuals as well as a community and how to coexist with each other. Over the years, public education has provided more support for students they would otherwise not have access to. The efforts to redirect funding of public education in the name of “school choice” puts public education at risk. Recentering the message around what public education is and how vital it is to our community through advocacy and actions that support it directly reminds educators and students that public education is a valuable and necessary part of the community.

  • As a mother,

Luhui wants our schools to be a safe and equitable place for each student to learn and grow.

  • As a leader,

Luhui is a fierce advocate when it comes to highlighting the needs of students, staff, and teachers, especially when it comes to policies or programs that impact the people of Corvallis School District.

  • As an activist,

Luhui has spent a lifetime advocating for societal change so we are all shown dignity and respect in our shared humanity with each other and the natural world

  • As an educator,

Luhui works so that students feel valued, represented, and respected in all aspects of their education.

In Corvallis, we still believe in the future of each child. We need leaders who will stand by and for the unique needs of the students in our district. We need leaders who will back our teachers, educational assistants, staff of all levels, and administrators who know public education in 2025 requires a wrap-around approach.

We need leaders like Dr. Luhui Whitebear who will listen, advocate, and continue to move words to action to support students in our community.

Dr. Luhui Whitebear (enrolled in the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation with Huastec & Cochimi ancestry) has served on the Corvallis School Board for the last 5 years. Luhui is running for a second term as representative of the Corvallis School District in Position 4.

“I am running for the Corvallis School Board to continue my advocacy for students and staff that are often still left in the margins.

“When I first became involved with school board service, I did not understand the depth of the ways in which this engagement could impact change both in the short term and long run in K-12 education. Over the past five years, I have learned that public education is under attack due to the ways in which decisions at the school board level impact the future of our communities and society as a whole. This may seem like a large statement to make, but it is true. The policies we create, update, and uphold influence who feels like they belong and who does not. They impact what is learned and what is not. They have the ability to change and save lives. I am in this for the students who need someone to speak up for them when they are not in the room, and when they are. Students who, like me, have felt the harm of public education and, like me, was also encouraged to learn the power of education to help create a better tomorrow.

There is still much work to do, especially in the current times we are in, and I am here for it. That is why I am running for reelection.”
